GCA construction management class helps minority and women owned businesses.

The annual GCA sponsored construction management course for minority and women owned businesses was a resounding success.  The course, developed to help small minority and women owned businesses grow and successfully compete for public sector construction work, was held at Manhattan College on January 7 through 9, 2014.  The training program focused on successful business essentials like understanding safe work practices and why they are so important, estimating, construction accounting and financial management, public contract law, bonding and insurance and other practical elements to build a strong and successful business.   Company owners and senior estimators at some of New York’s largest construction firms discussed with the owner attendees how to grow a business, figure out how much risk to take, determine what kind of staff expertise is needed, learn out how to estimate construction costs taking into account available work hours and project access, and understand how subcontractor quotes are evaluated.
