New Lake Champlain bridge opens. Other critical infrastructure needs in the state remain.
The new Lake Champlain Bridge opens today, November 7, two years after the discovery of poor conditions on the old bridge forced the closure and subsequent demolition of the bridge. The economic hardship on the surrounding communities highlighted the critical role our bridges, roads and transit play in our basic mobility and quality of life. While this bridge was replaced in record time, there remain countless other critical transportation needs in New York City and throughout the state. Our core bridge and transit capital programs are underfunded and our transportation infrastructure conditions are worsening. As Governor Cuomo plans his state budget for next year, we call on him and the State Legislature to work together to fully fund the NYSDOT and MTA capital programs.
