Subway Construction Costs and Project Labor Agreements

Crain’s New York Business, January 9, 2018

Some facts on this issue will go a long way. Contrary to views expressed in the business leaders’  letter to the Governor, there are no project labor agreements that govern subway construction work, and any contractor, union or non-union, is able to submit a bid for subway construction projects and have that bid evaluated against the project’s qualification requirements.

There is a long list of contractors that have lost money or gone out of business at the hands of an MTA contract.  It is easier to believe that contractors working on MTA projects make record profits rather than to spend the time understanding the difficulties of constructing anything in New York.
